DMZ and Border Experiences
DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)
Travel time: 1 to 1.5 hours. The border between North and South Korea is one of the most surreal places you can visit. Most visitors join an organized tour that includes the Third Infiltration Tunnel, Dora Observatory, and Dorasan Station. Tours depart daily from central Seoul and should be booked in advance.
Natural and Historic Escapes
Nami Island
Travel time: 1.5 hours. A small river island famous for its tree-lined avenues that are spectacular in autumn and spring. Take the ITX train from Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong Station, then a short taxi to the ferry dock. The island takes about 2 to 3 hours to explore.
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
Travel time: 45 minutes on Metro Line 1. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Korea’s best-preserved fortress walls. The 5.7-kilometer wall takes about 2 hours to walk in full and the old city inside has traditional markets and street food.
Yangpyeong
Travel time: 1 hour by ITX. A rural area along the North Han River east of Seoul, popular for cycling, glamping, and riverside dining. It offers a peaceful escape with beautiful natural scenery completely different from the city.
Cultural and Culinary Destinations
Incheon Chinatown and Songdo
Travel time: 1 hour by metro. Korea’s only official Chinatown sits near Incheon Station with an interesting mix of Korean and Chinese culture. Nearby Songdo is a futuristic planned city with a large central park modeled on New York’s Central Park.
Gyeongju
Travel time: 2 hours by KTX. The ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom is sometimes called the museum without walls. Royal tombs, Buddhist temples, and stone pagodas are scattered throughout the city. Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Jeonju
Travel time: 1.5 hours by KTX. Korea’s food capital and home to the country’s most famous hanok village. Bibimbap originated here and eating the royal version in Jeonju is a genuine culinary highlight. Take the KTX from Yongsan Station.
